km-Scale Global Modelling Summit 2026
Join us in July in Hamburg!
The call for contributions for the km-Scale Global Modelling Summit 2026 is now open. This international meeting, organized by the WarmWorld project and its partners, brings together researchers and practitioners working at the forefront of high-resolution Earth system modelling.
The summit will take place in Hamburg and aims to advance the rapidly evolving field of kilometre-scale modelling — spanning developments in process understanding, numerical modelling, high-performance computing, and also tapping into the use of artificial intelligence.
Researchers are invited to submit abstracts (up to 400 words) presenting recent results, emerging methodologies, and future perspectives. The submission deadline is 31 March 2026.
About the Summit
The km-scale modelling community has seen major progress in recent years, driven by advances in computing architectures and model development. The summit will provide a forum to:
- Take stock of insights from the first generation of global km-scale simulations
- Discuss challenges in data handling, model performance, and scalability
- Explore new programming paradigms and AI-driven approaches
- Strengthen links between modelling, observations, and applications
Bringing together the communities and the expertise from across disciplines, the meeting aims to shape a coordinated research agenda for the next phase of high-resolution Earth system modelling.
Future perspectives
WarmWorld is contributing to a new generation of climate models that resolve key processes such as clouds, ocean eddies, and extreme events at kilometre scale. This shift is essential for improving regional climate information and enabling more robust climate impact assessments.
The km-Scale Global Modelling Summit 2026 represents an important step in consolidating these efforts at the international level — fostering collaboration, aligning developments, and accelerating progress toward exascale-ready Earth system models.
